Research

In the area of research, the main lines of action are (i) the promotion and coordination of research groups and the management of research projects; (ii) the participation in joint researches with other national or international centres or organizations; (iii) the organization of seminars for specialists in competition policy (expert seminars); and (iv) the signing of agreements with public and private institutions, both national and international, to carry out studies and reports on issues related to the design and application of competition policy.

The Royal University Institute of European Studies and its Centre for Competition Policy have developed a series of projects in recent years:

Jean Monnet Module: Single Market and Competition Law

This proposal aimed at offering three courses on “Single European Market & Economic and Monetary Union”, “EU Competition Law (I): Private Restraints”, and “EU Competition Law (II): Public Restraints”, which were taught progressively over three years by Professor Jerónimo Maíllo.

The courses, conferences, and seminars were supported by young post-doctoral researchers, junior researchers, and research scholars. Doctors Justo Corti, Javier Porras, and María Peñarrubia were part of this team.

Jean Monnet Project: Energy Taxation and State Aid control

The project sought to contribute to the prioritized objectives of the European Union with a new way of approaching traditional legal research on environmental taxation: through the perspective of EU State Aid control. Up to now, taxes on energy as well as the emission trading system were considered an important mechanism to promote environmental objectives.

Two books and multiple working papers were carried out in this project.

The fight against cartels is essential to improve the competitiveness of our economy. This project aims to make an important contribution, with undoubtedly practical results, which will help authorities and judges to make better decisions in this area and improve business and industrial competitiveness within Spain and in a European and international context.

R&D&I project on the fight against hard-core cartels in Spain

With a duration of three years and with the participation of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the National Competition Authority, this project studied the prevention, arrest, testing and sanctioning of hard-core economic cartels in Spain.

Fostering growth in Europe

This project provided a forum for researchers, academics, policy makers and interest groups to reflect on the strengthening of the European Internal Market. Thanks to this, the International Conference and subsequent monograph entitled "Fostering growth in Europe: Reinforcing the internal market." was able to be carried out.

European Banking Union: the new regime

This project was developed in conjunction with the Real Instituto Elcano and with the sponsorship of Banco Santander. This conference allowed a debate about the current situation and future projections of the Banking Union in an international forum.

Thanks to the Instituto de Crédito Oficial funding, this project made possible to analyse the significant changes that have transformed the European stock markets, profoundly modifying the face of the financial system.

R&D&I project "Judges and Competition Law"

Spanning a four-year period, the funding for Project "Jueces y Derecho de la Competencia" (PID2020-115314GB-100) is provided by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The primary objective is to scrutinize the transformations within the judiciary pertaining to Competition Law in Spain and the EU throughout the past decade.
